Recently international trade settlement method has been changed very much. The L/C based settlement method is decreased, but the collection and remittance method are increased. Also, electronic payment method using internet due to the rapid development of IT is progressively enlarged. Under this circumstance, after examining the current status and problem of traditional settlement method and electronic settlement method, this study is to suggest the factors affecting the selection of electronic settlement through an empirical study.
The basic materials used in this study are taken from the previous researches in relation to the electronic settlement system. The research data is collected from trading firms in Korea through web survey questionnaire. As a way of facilitating the analysis of empirical study, this study set up sixteen hypotheses in order to find out the selection factors of electronic settlement. Among the sixteen, all hypotheses were adopted except four hypotheses such as standardize and circulation of electronic documents, building of electronic repository, participation of payment guarantee organization, mutual recognition of electronic certification. This point could be interpreted that the four factors are not directly related with the selection of electronic settlement.
This study has found three selection factors of electronic settlement method. The first one is a payment system and infrastructure factor(6 variables}. It means that building of e-trade settlement infrastructure is needed. In particular, the system building and support for small and medium-sized companies is absolutely required.
The second one is a security and certification of law(5 variables). It suggests that trading firms worry about the information exposure and mutual trust between transaction parties if they adopt the electronic settlement method. Therefore it is necessary to prepare or revise the related laws and provisions for the expansion of electronic settlement.
The last factor is a convenience and cost factor(5 variables). It imply that every trading firms consider very seriously the factors affecting their interest directly. This factors are correspondent with the result of previous literature research.
In conclusion, this study has proved that most of the factors except four factors are critically important for the selection of electronic settlement. However, this study has is a limitation that it has not performed the practical effect and lever of electronic settlement
