Space in film help people to develop their imagination. The space in film is one way to make people believe in imaginative story as a real story and convey the situations and atmosphere in movies. It is true that the space is the most important visual factor in movies. The audiences who get so attracted to images or feel vividness is because of a magical strength of spaces. It is like a hypnotic tool for people to fall for unreal world and make a great impression visually to the audience. The space gets notified by the audience every single time and help the audience to focus by giving them a reality. Therefore, the space should be counted as the most important element in film making, as it decides the direction of a movie in terms of visual, story and structure.
The space in SF movie is an important element in terms of genre. SF movies talk about scientific discovery or development, usually in the future, through a story plot and a background. Thus, the background image plays an important role with the narrative in deciding movie genre as SF. Visual approach is a fundamental and very important method in SF movie. Generally, the background for SF movie is usually an imagination in unreal world and there are various kinds. The atmosphere of those SF movies that focus on mechanism or space shuttle depends on the background images. Therefore, the background and the character's living place is a beginning of making SF movie.
The SF movies that are made in Hollywood spend most of their fund in making imaginative world. This is part of their business. SF has always been there on top in development of movie industry with new technology. For this reason, SF has been like a showcase for newer technology and focused on who could make more creative and fantastic world. Until now, SF movies made people to feel and experience those places that we have never been to and acknowledged as part of its genre. Therefore it is hard for the audience to feel reality. Also, Hollywood produces more and more about the world that is beyond people's imagination and create a perfect simulacre and focuses on spectacle and imagination, as time goes on. At this point of time, 〈Disctrict 9〉, the SF movie that does not rely on technological simulation was released. This movie concentrates more on social perspective than visual fantasy. SF and fantasy is a natural combination, but SF with realism is not a usual combination. However, as if it asks a question, 'Was it just a stereotype?', this unique SF movie was released in 2009. Just when all the movies were focusing on newer technology in the future or producing disaster films about destroyed earth by people's selfishness, because 〈District 9〉 which is about powerless aliens hurt by human beings and does not have artificial sets or fantastic visualization in the movie, is categorized as anti Hollywood SF movie. 〈District 9〉 is definitely an unfamiliar movie to the audience who are very used to unreal world created by visual special effect.
〈District 9〉 is special to the audience because the origin of place is real and the story is real. Especially Johannesburg plays an important role in this movie, delivering racism and conflicts between developed and undeveloped countries through the relationship between aliens and human beings. Choosing places in all movies is very important in terms of narrative, but it is especially important in SF movies. Thus, a correlation between SF and space will be discussed in this paper and how choosing a real space in 〈District 9〉 is combined with distinct feature of genre and how this will affect in making SF movies in the future.
