King Lear captures the time of transition. The time was a period of transition that the economic system of the England is about to change from feudalism to capitalism. The period was when the concept of capitalism was infiltrating into the economic action of English people. As a private property, for instance, a desire for the possessions towards land is come to spread over English society and people at that time. So it seems that the material benefit to an individual had influenced on the philosophy of one's action and human relations.
In this treatise, to connect with this recognition, my main interest was concentrated on clarifying of people's sense of value and a private property, especially on land. For the purpose of this, I analyzed the words and action of Lear, Edmund, and Cordelia, chiefly.
It is difficult to clarify the truth of Cordelia's attitude towards property because we cannot know exactly the intention of her declarations: "nothing" and "I love your Majesty according to my bond; no more nor less." But if Cordelia disappointed her father's expectation intentionally in order to avoid marriage to the Duke of Burgundy, she was winner in the 'dreary love' test. She was a happy woman because she came to marry the king of France, in other words she would enjoy romantic matrimony as a wife of the king of France and have immense wealth.
But Lear didn't fully realize what the meaning of material property to human beings is. Although he alloted all his property to Goneril and Regan, he was abandoned by his two ungrateful daughters. So he was reduced to an impoverished vagabondage like Tom who couldn't help escaping from his father's wrath owing to misunderstanding. As a father, it would have been natural to Lear to give all his property to his daughters, but that was his fatal fault. He was unaware that his property was a key point of physical well-being in actual life. An one's private property is a substantial guarantee in fact, it is also one of the basic conditions on the earthly happiness.
On the other hand, Edmund was clear-sighted about property, that is land as a fount of social and economic status in capitalistic social system. In this sense, despite of his ingratitude, immorality, and all kinds of his evil roles, I would like to classify him as the most typical capitalist in this play. He reminds me the 'gentry' who arose as the new aristocracy who used their excellent brains and big property as a stepping stone in the early seventeenth century. We can see the aspect that he risked every possible wrongdoing for the rising in the world. Like this, people who live in the society of capitalistic system tend to act for their material profit.
In conclusion, because Edmund and Cordelia achieved some successes in that capitalistic society from capitalist's point of view, I consider that we should evaluate differently the success of Cordelia and Edmund from the conclusion of the promotion of virtue and reproval of vice in King Lear.
