The survey of frequencies of antimicrobial resistance of bacteria is necessary not only for the empirical selection of antimicrobial agent for the treatment of patients, but also for establishing measures to control emergence of resistance. WHO Regional Office for the Western Pacific initiated to collect data from 12 member countries. Severance Hospital, Yonsei University Medical School is selected as a member for Korea. In this study, the resistance rates, which were obtained by processing the data fo the routine disk test with the software provided by the WHO, were compared to those obtained by the agar dilution test in a recent study. Also the resistance rates were compared with those of the other countries. It was found that in most bacterial species the resistance rates by the disk diffusion and the agar dilution tests were similar. It is concluded that in most cases the data can represent true state of resistance and that the resistance rates at Severance Hospital are comparable to the highest rates in other countries.
