The purpose of this article is to study the relationship between the State and Religion during the Mexican Revolution. The principal objective of this study is to analyze the attitude of the Catholic Church and the Protestant Church to the Mexican Revolution. For this proposal, I analyze the Cristeros Revolt of Catholic peasants and Constitutionalist Movement of Protestants.
The main findings of this investigation are as follows. While the Catholic Church supported Armed Revolt of Cristeros, the Protestant Church positively took the part of the Mexican Revolution. The role of religion has been changed according to the socioeconomic conditions. Although the hierarchy of the Catholic Church didn't officially take part with the armed revolt, the majority of the Catholic Church tended to support the conservative revolt to maintain their richness and the privileges. On the contrary, the Protestant Church followed the progressive line for their religious and ideological objectives. Even though there were different positions within the protestants, the majority of the Protestant Church took the part of the Constitutionalists line of the Revolution. Especially the Protestant Church played an ideological role of change in the process of the modern capitalist expansion in Mexico.
