This paper aims to investigate the significances of appearance of the first woman president Michelle Bachelet in one of the conservatist countries with catholicism and paternalism. And this study also presents changes of chilean socio-political contexts and estimations of leadership style of Bachelet.
During Chile's transition to democracy, perception of women's socio-political role has changed significantly. As an electoral gender quota system is not established yet in Chile, the representation of women remains very low. On the contrary, Ricardo Lagos's efforts to organize his cabinet including five women ministers gave opportunities to change its traditional awareness of women's political activities. And the faith of strong women and mother, a modern interpretation of marianismo gave a more possibility to adapt first woman president in Chile. And the leadership of Bachelet can be caracterized by self-established and feminine leadership.
