The annual off-road vehicle race to undergraduate students, the official title ‘KSAE Baja’, is held by KSAE. Hanyang University Team ‘RACE’ participates in ‘KSAE Baja’ every year. The regulation of the race restricts the engine to 125㏄ single cylinder engine which is made in Korea. Most of conventional 125㏄ engine uses carburetor and capacitive discharge ignition system. The conventional engine system cannot react accurately to driver’s input command. However, fast and accurate response of the engine is an important factor in race. In addition, high power output of the engine is also a significant issue. Engine management system, therefore, is required to improve engine performance.
In this paper, we developed an engine management system for the conventional 125㏄ single cylinder engine. In order to control fuel injection and ignition, we added sensors and actuators to the conventional engine. Besides, an electronic control unit was designed to drive the engine. The developed engine management system was verified with experiments under various operating conditions using dynamometer.
