This study is aimed at re-analyzing English Quotative Inversion Constructions(QIC) from the viewpoint of parallel movement operation proposed in Chomsky(2005). To begin with, we examined and argued in favor of the v-to-T movement and the Spec-v*P subject position in QIC suggested in Collins(1997) and C & B(1997), but with several problems unsolved.
In the syntactic distribution of Quote in QIC, we observed that it behaves not only as an argument but also as a non-argument like wh-phrases. We proposed, on this ground, that copies of the Quote rise to Spec-TP and Spec-CP respectively, which Chomsky(2005) called parallel A/A’-movement.
In conclusion, we verified that this type of movement is the best way to account for the position of Quote in QIC in English which has been discussed for a long time.
