This study is to analyze the characteristics of the fur and leather clothes worn by the China's minority races in Southwest regions by classifying them into caps, costumes, and shoes, based on the study of the literature. It also tries to compare them with those of the Northeast Mongolia, the precedent study. It is found out that the leather hats were worn by the nomads in the highland of the southwest regions to protect them from the intense cold weather and the ultraviolet rays. They are classified into 3 types by shape: cylinders, flower petals and helmets.
Their clothes included the long topcoats for protection against cold, coats, vests and cloaks. The length of the top coats had the distinctiveness of the Tibet's, with their length to the ankles and their sleeves to the thighs. The edges of the top coats were decorated with the leopard or tiger leathers to emphasize manly valor. They wore their vests with the fur parts inside on clear days and with the fur parts outside on rainy days. They used their cloaks for protection against wind in the daytime. They were heavy and thick enough to use them as a blanket at night. They were appropriate for nomad life.
As for their shoes, boots were well developed. At the same time, shoes were found out for their daily lives. Considering the cold weather and the height of the southwest regions, furs and leathers used for their clothes were very useful for protection against cold weather. They gave importance to both function and utility.
