Modern people are pursuing various fashion trends in 21st century since the concept of self has collapsed and the identity or certainty of the self has been ambiguous, while they have enjoyed material wealth as an age of changing values or ethics. In the mid-nineteenth century, Kimono(着物), a Japanese traditional dress, had an effect on the whole Western culture and modern fashion, and a new field of a Japanese fashion has been built in the realm of modern fashion by presenting a new trend to the world fashion industry. As a result of this, a lot of formative factors of Japanese traditional dresses have been used in modern fashion so far, and they have seriously been dealt with as the source of inspiration by modern designers claiming to advocate the avant-garde.
An American avant-garde art critic, Leonard Koren, said that Issey Miyake is the best avant-garde artist and international designer produced by a combination of Japanese and Western arts among Japanese avant-garde designers. Therefore, the purpose of this study is to analyze the plasticity of Japanese traditional dresses expressed on the works of Issey Miyake that express the fashion as a kind of visual sculpture. I collected 105 photographs in which the plasticity was expressed on Japanese traditional designs through the works of Issey Miyake and used them for documentary research and analyses of materials. Furthermore, I chose eight pieces of materials that are considered proper by 22 persons who majored in fashion design and related sciences among those collected materials to select them as final objects of this study.
The formative characteristics appeared on Japanese traditional dresses is that they are in harmony with the modern fashion industry based on such formative factors as forms, colors and materials, and that Issey Miyake's works show formative characteristics and spiritual values, expressing the Japanese traditional aesthetic and philosophical attitude that have developed from basic forms to more complicated and sophisticated aspects together with the creation of new things in order to understand Japanese traditional dresses, not merely showing a way of using Japanese traditional dresses.
