Hee-Chun Kang had been a key figure in the field of Christian education in South Korea. He was an unusual kind of Christian educator, professor and writer whose work had a profound effect on Christian education as a discipline. Born in Jeonju, Jeollabuk-do in 1951, Kang died unexpectedly in 2003 at the age of fifty-two years. He received his BA and MA degrees from Yonsei University, his M.Ed. from Harvard University and his Ph.D. in History and Philosophy of Education from Oxford University.
After 4 years as a assistant professor at Jeonju University, Kang served from 1987-2003 as a professor of Christian education at Yonsei University. Besides teaching, Kang was actively involved in various academic societies such as International Academy of Practical Theology, World Council of Comparative Education Societies, and Korean Association for Religious Education. In 2000 Kang helped to found Korea Society for Christian Education & Information Technology(KSCEIT), and served as the first president of KSCEIT(2000-2002).
Kang had written 7 books and some 100 articles. His key contribution to the study of Christian education is The Thought of Christian Education(1991). In his book, Kang summarized the nature of Christian education as follows: ⑴ Christian education should be practical theology, not an applied theology. Christian education should not simply apply the theoretical knowledge interpreted by biblical studies or systematic theology. ⑵ The most appropriate method for Christian education is an interdisciplinary approach. The interdisciplinary approach places its focus on the concrete context and correlates different disciplines. ⑶ The task of Christian education is to reflect on the traditional approaches to education, as well as on church tradition, through the critical reflection method.
Kang had left his marks on Korean Christian education. If we consider his thought and writings as a whole, there is no doubt that he had made a huge and far-reaching contribution to our thinking about Christian education. The value of Kang's legacy will continue to shape and broaden our perspective on our understanding of Christian education significantly.
