『유형지에서』의 글 읽기 특징은 양극적 독법이다. 본고는 먼저 작품 내에서 파악할 수 있는 장교와 탐험가의 양극적 입장을 구제도 및 구체제 유지를 위한 장교의 적극적, 광신적, 열정적 행위와 이에 대응하는 탐험가의 수동적, 소극적, 무위 방관적 태도로 분류해 살펴본다. 그런 다음 지금까지 텍스트 해석에 나타난 양극적 현상, 즉 정치적 해석과 비정치적 해석으로 구분해 고찰한다. 정치적 해석에서는 독재 권력 유지를 위한 고문과 살인, 그리고 홀로코스트 등과 관련한 문제들이 다루어질 것이고, 비정치적 해석에서는 피고인의 처형을 인식과 변용, 그리고 구원의 관점에서 파악한 종교적 해석, 그리고 특히 장교와 전임 사령관에게서 확인할 수 있는 사도 마조히즘과 관련한 성 심리적 해석 등이 논의될 것이다. 그러나 본고는 정치적 해석 쪽에 보다 비중을 둔다. 왜냐하면 이 단편은 인도주의가 실종되고, 기술적 합리성과 극도의 야만성이 결합된, 근대전쟁을 규정짓는 상황을 예시하고 있으며, 특히 고통의 연속인 암울한 정치적 미래상을 제시하고 있기 때문이다. 소설의 마지막에 병사와 죄수의 승선(乘船)을 저지하기 위해 치켜든 탐험가의 두 손은, 극히 사소한 이유에서 말채찍으로 저 죄수의 얼굴을 내리 쳤던 구 제국주의 대위의 손을 연상케 한다. 이 마지막 장면은 구 식민 주의자들 못지않게 계몽된 신 식민주의자들도 계속해서 원주민들을 고통 속으로 몰아넣을 것이라는 정치적 비관주의를 보여준다.
끝으로 전체 소설의 핵심 주제어인 고통이 카프카의 글쓰기와 관련해 어떤 의미를 갖는지도 알아본다. 유형지의 “독특한 기구”는 처형기계와 글 쓰는 기계라는 야누스의 얼굴을 지니고 있다. 따라서 이 소설에서는 카프카의 글쓰기에 대한 암시들이 장교의 발언과 그의 소망 및 불안 속에 투영되어 있다. 기계의 삐걱거림, 수많은 장애와 고장들은 카프카의 글쓰기에 수반되는 장애요인들이기도 하다. 장교의 편집광적인 설명도 카프카의 독자에 대한 끊임없는 정당화 시도에 상응한다. 탐험가, 죄수, 병사들은 거의 말이 없는 독자들이며 글쓰기 과정의 관찰자들이다. 그런데 왜 기계는 읽을 수도 없고, 해독할 수 없는 글자를 죄수의 몸에 새겨 넣어야 하는 걸까? 글자 새기기가 아니더라도 고통 스러운 고문은 얼마든지 있을 텐데. 글자 새기기는 인생 자체가 글쓰기의 연속이었던 작가 자신의 고통을 암시하는 걸까? 그러나 글쓰기는 고통스럽긴 하지만, 카프카에겐 자기 파괴의 행위가 아니라 유일한 해방행위였다. 우리의 인생은 죽을 때까지 고통과 고뇌에 찬 궤도를 달리고 있다. 따라서 『유형지』는 우리의 인생에 대한 은유일지도 모른다.

Reading characteristic of In penal colony is polarity of reading way. This paper investigates bipolar circumstance of officer and explorer by classifying active, fanatical and passionate action of officer for the preservation of old system and regime and the corresponding passive, negative, and inactive looking attitude of explorer. Then, bipolar phenomena, which have appeared on text interpretation, are considered by dividing political analysis and apolitical analysis. Problems regarding colonial policy of imperialism, torture and massacre for the preservation of dictatorship power, and holocaust etc. will be dealt in political analysis, and religious analysis which understands the accused's execution in view of cognition, transfiguration, and salvation and sex psychological analysis regarding sadomasochism which can confirm especially from officer and former commandant will be discussed in unpolitical analysis. This paper, however, puts weight more on political analysis. It is because this short story illustrates circumstance that define the modern age war in which humanism is disappeared, and technological rationality and extreme brutality are combined, and presents gloomy political image in the future that is series of pain. Two hands of explorer to hinder the embarkation of soldier and prisoner on last of novel remind us of captain's hands in old imperialism who beat the prisoner's face by horsewhip for extremely trivial reason. This last scene shows political pessimism that enlightened new colonialists as well as old colonialists will continually drive natives into pain.
Finally, the meaning of pain, which is a core keyword of whole novel, will be discussed regarding Kafka's writing. “Peculiar apparatus” in penal colony is preserving Janus' face that is both execution machine and writing machine. Therefore, great many hints about Kafka's writing were projected in officer's speaking and his wish and anxiety in this novel. Jarring of machine, great many difficulties, and breakdowns are also obstacle factors that is accompanied in Kafka's writing. Officer's monomaniacal explanations correspond to the ceaseless justification attempt of Kafka to his reader. Explorer, prisoner and soldiers are almost speechless readers and observers of writing process. By the way, why should machine carve the unreadable and indecipherable letters in lawbreaker's body? Even if it is not to engrave letter, painful torture will be without limit. To engrave letter hints writer's own torment whose life itself was sequence of writing? Writing is painful, however, it was not the action of self-destruction to Kafka, but his one and only release conduct. Our life is running on the track full of pain and suffering until we die. Therefore, In penal colony may be metaphor for our life.
