When we define Cien anos de soledad (One hundred years of solitude) of Gabriel Garcia Marquez, we tend to approach it with terms like 'fantasy' or 'unreality'. In this novel it seems that the reality and the fantasy exist without limit or the fantasy overwhelms the reality, or all the episodes are pure inventions. But, as the same author clarified, he has never invented any reality for a novel; and the space-temporal level, the personages, the episodes are based on his direct and indirect experiences. Even what is seen as the unreal, is another poetic transposition of the reality. Gabriel Garcia Marquez shows us metaphorically the hidden truth behind the history and reality of Latin America using a concept called ‘realismo magico (magic realism)'. In other words, with this concept or technique, Garcia Marquez amplifies enough the category of the Latin American reality, looking for the true liberation of the Latin Americans.
Until now there have been many studies on the novels and life of Garcia Marquez. Recently a voluminous autobiography has been published: Vivir para contarla (Living to tell the tale), and many things which until now have been in the deep mystery are going to be clarified. Thanks to this, we readers can decipher Cien anos de soledad from other points of view. Above all, the personages are very characteristic: sometimes they look very unreal. Nevertheless, they are the poetic transposition of the personages with whom Gabriel Garcia Marquez has met direct and indirectly in his life. They are metaphors of the Latin Americans. Thanks to them, the life of Macondo crosses frequently the limit between reality and fantasy.
This study attempts to show the limit between the magic reality and the author's reality from the historical and biographical points of view; that is to say, to examine the process which poetically created the personages of Macondo who lived in the eternal solitude for six generations and disappeared eternally with their town by the rage of the biblical hurricane, as Melquiades had written in epigraph of parchments.
