This thesis examines the international trend in Japanese Literature focusing on Oe Kenzaburo, the awarded Nobel Prize winner in literature. First, I examined the acceptance of Western Literature and Oe Kenzaburo, the acceptance of Western Literature in the modern Japanese Literature and its definition and the foundation of international trend in Oe‘s literature: namely, the influence of the Western Literature, the interest in the Western culture and art, its acknowledgement of diversity and pursuing the generalization of the regional characteristics.
Secondly, I examined the possible causation of international trend in three different ways quoting Oe‘s main works: the recognition of human existence in his early works, proposing the common survival of human race mainly through his work A Personal Matter, and pursuing the minorities, the problem of seeking isolation, and humanism as the basic foundation of his works.
Lastly, in order to present Oe‘s literature to the world, I presented the statistics of his works that has been translated. Ever since his first translation came out in 1959, his works, total 36 works out of his 35 year of writing, have been translated into 19 different languages. Also, the writer himself actively participated in international writer workshops, seminars and conferences from his early 20s and made his name known as a writer with progressive mind. Also, the supports from the various culture foundations, publishing companies, and related communities have contributed to develop international trend in Oe’s literature.
