Fear of crime has been one of the major growth areas for both academic research and policy initiatives, because it has negative social consequences beyond a deep-seated sense of personal anxiety. Consistently across all studies female gender has been the best predictor of fear of crime. But when according to published crime figures, they are less likely than men to be victimized. Why women express greater fear of crime than men do, although they are less likely than men to be victimized? This dissertation starts from this question. In exploring to answer this question, this dissertation is different from past conventional studies which deal with between previous victimization and fear of crime in one respect. Past studies on female fear of crime have focused predominantly on fear of rape and serious sexual violence victimization as rape. However, this study intend to show how sexual harassment victimization considered by many to be less serious such as offensive comments or touches in the street, at work, and in school cause intimidation and fear of crime. These study shows that sexual harassment offences which might be less likely to the attention of the police, such as being followed, receiving an obscene phone call, or being the victim of an indecent exposure, are strongly associated with fear of crime.
