In modern societies, the basic function of transportation is to make local connections. Besides, it promotes economical activities such as production and consumption and improves residents' living standard. However, in order to compete with other means of transportation, the minimum speed of railway should be figured. In Wonju-Gangneung Double Gauge Railway Project, the appropriate design speed comparing with road traffic is investigated.
The purpose of this paper achieves the speed competitiveness. Since, railway is not gaining competitiveness over others in terms of speed, the improvement of speed is necessary to overcome the disadvantage of 'door to door' and to be a attractive means of transportation which users favor.
In this paper, the optimum speed for Wonju-Gangneung Double Gauge Railway is calculated to be
competition by comparing with road transport such as Yeongdong Expressway Section2.
