Pathology of invasion and metastasis of cancer is highly complex, and we often see unique or specific pattern in each organ site. In order to explore and clarify those molecular mechanisms, we have conducted comprehensive analyses of gene expression correlating with invasion and metastasis of several types of cancers using human samples or cell lines transplanted orthotopically in immunodeficient mice. In case of pancreas cancer, we established orthotopic models using 12 surgically resected tumors and 10 cell lines. Interestingly, almost 100% take rate was demonstrated in the series, and metastases of the orthotopic tumors of pancreatic cancer tissues to lymph nodes nicely resembled the clinical picture of individual patients.
