Cretaceous nonmarine basins are, excluding the Gyeongsang Basin, distributed along both sides of the boundary fault systems of the Okcheon Belt in the mid-southern part of the Korean Peninsular. Investigation has indicated that these basins were formed by sinistral transtensional tectonic motion of the boundary faults. In the Gongju Basin, conglomerate, red sandstone, dark gray mudstone and andesitic rocks have accumulated in ascending order. The Gongju Basin was formed by NE sinistral strike-slip faulting as a fault band type basin and the depocenter migrated from NE to SW. NW trending dextral strike-slip faults were formed as antithetic Riedle shears to the NE bounding faults. The dextral movement caused anticlockwise block rotation and consequently the dip angle of the western part of the basin became steep. Finally, the NW trending faults were reactivated with a sinistral senses of shear at a late stage of their movement history.
