We present the results of the palaeomagnetic study on the Early Cretaceous sedimentary Hayang Group sampled from Yongyang area in the northeastern part of the Kyongsang basin. The sampled formations of the Hayang Group comprise the Uillyonsan, Tonghwachi, Kasongdong, Chongnyangsan, Osippong, and Togyedong Formations in ascending order. Thermal demagnetization of the samples allowed us to isolate a high-temperature ChRM component which passes positive fold and/or reversal tests except the Osippong Formation. Also the fold test of the 4 formation-mean ChRMs remains positive at the 95% confidence level indicating pre-folding primary magnetizations, with a mean direction of D=27.0°, I=56.1°, k=336, α₉₅=5.0°. The corresponding palaeopole at 68.4°N, 210.7°E (K=237.4, A₉₅=6.0°) is coherent with the palaeopoles of Hayang Group in the other parts of the Kyongsang basin. A comparison of the mean palaeomagnetic pole position from the Hayang Group of the studied area with the contemporary pole from the China west of the Tan-Lu fault shows that the Yongyang area had experienced little latitudinal displacement (1.7°±5.5°) nor vertical-axis block rotation (8.2°±6.9°) relative to the Chinese blocks since the Early Cretaceous. In regard to the magnetostratigraphic correlation of the formations indicating dual polarities, the middle Kasongdong Formation and the lower strata should be older than 120.5 Ma. The reverse polarity zone recorded in the upper Togyedong Formation correlates to the Late Aptian (M-1r) or middle Albian reverse polarity subchrons. Based on the palaeomagnetic pole position, radiometric age and field evidence, the age of basalts in the Osippong Formation has been assigned to be the upper Late Cretaceous.
