Sedimentology of the Sindong and Hayang Groups and its implications for stratigraphic classifications are reviewed. The relationship between major elements which controlled depositional systems and unit- and boundary-stratotypes is discussed in detail. The proto-Gyeongsang Basin during the Sindong period and the expanded Gyeongsang Basin during the Hayang period were grabens occupied by alluvial fan, fluvial plain and lake systems towards the basin centre. This resulted in rapid lateral facies changes, especially in upstream to downstream directions. Volcanic terranes which developed along faults during the Hayang period also gave rise to local facies changes. In the Gyeongsang Basin, alluvial fan systems were controlled mainly by tectonism, fluvial plain and lake systems mainly by climate, and volcanic terranes dominantly by volcanism. Deposits of each system and terrane, which have unique facies associations, correspond to the unit-stratotypes of most formations and members. The Sindong/Hayang Group boundary is the lacustrine/fluvial plain transition between the Jinju and Chilgog or Iljig Formations, but is not coincident with the volcanism and basin expansion, which began in the latest Jinju and early Chilgog times respectively. The stratigraphy of the Hayang Group changes notably (1) over the Andong fault as fluvial plain and alluvial fan deposits and volcanic flows increase towards the northern basin margin, and (2) over the Palgongsan line along which a fault existed during the Silla time. The Silla and Gumidong Conglomerates were deposited coevally, but are confined respectively to the more subsided southern and less subsided northern fault blocks. The present lithostratigraphic classifications are applicable to most of the Gyeongsang Basin as far as surface stratigraphy is concerned.
