Petrology of 44 sandstone samples of the Sindong Group in the southwestern part of the Gyeongsang Basin, 21 from the Habcheon-Sinban and 23 from the Won-ji-Moonsan sections, are studied in terms of texture and mineralogical composition. On the basis of the analytical data, rock type and provenance of the sandstones are discussed. Most sandstones are the fluvial channel deposits in the Nagdong and Hasandong Formations and the sublacustrine channel deposits in the Jinju Formation. The provenance of the Sindong Group consisted mainly of crystalline rocks such as gneiss and granite, and subordinately of supracrustal sedimentary and metasedimentary rocks. However, during the depositional period of the uppermost Jinju Formation(about 300 m), volcanic terranes were developed in and along the margin of the basin. Non-volcanic sandstones are composed of monocrystalline and polycrystalline quartz and feldspar grains from the plutonic and metamorphic rocks, and rock fragments of shale, schist and felsite. Calcite often replaces feldspar and quartz grains and infills interstitial voids. Interstices are infilled also by chlorite in some instances. Volcanic sandstones contain all the minerals and rock fragments of the non-volcanic sandstones, and abundant volcani-clastics-rock fragments, quartz grains and angular fresh plagioclase particles. Inter-stices commonly are infilled by calcite or chlorite. All the sandstones are classified as arenites, containing low content(<15%) of interstitial material, especially original matrix. Feldspar content generally increases upward, so that a large proportion of the sandstones of the Hasandong and Jinju Formations falls into arkose. Exceptionally, sandstones of the uppermost 300 m of the Jinju Formation are volcanic arenites.
