Wireless mesh network (WMN) is recently gaining popularity and sparking a number of academic interests. WMN offers lower cost, complete coverage, faster speed and reliable connection. Moreover, it is also self-organized and self-configured which makes it the ultimate next generation wireless networking system. Along with its potential, a number of design implementations especially built for this kind of system are still unknown and have yet to be discovered. A WMN is composed of two entities (router and client) that mayor may not have power constraints. Most existing energy efficient algorithms are based on static and homogenous ad hoc wireless network. This paper proposes a two-tier energy efficient algorithm for WMN which consolidates both clustering formation and topology control to develop an energy efficient network.
