The Victorian age is said to be one of the most turbulent ages in English history, but it enjoyed much social stability and envied economic progress. Just behind the progress it suffered from "a sense of spiritual nothingness," which had been brought by the famous controversy between science and religion. Pacing with the development of science, more and more people could not accept the old spiritual values established on the Christianity. The contemporary scientists argued that human beings with complicated organism had no soul and man's destiny had limits only in this world.
In the circumstance Tennyson faced Hallam's death, who died suddenly in Vienna in 1833. His death brought Tennyson a chance to meditate on man's destiny deeply, and finally he got much comfort in mind through faith on existence of man's soul and God.
Even though Tennyson became depressed in the course of much thought, he overcame his doubt of the immortality, and gained his assurance of the immortality by his own inner experience. Tennyson's faith in the immortality of the soul helps us believe that man's life is not a transient physical existence, but an eternal spiritual reality.
