초록·키워드
The sedimentary sequence in the Danyang coalfield is correlated with the newly proposed groups and formations in the Samcheog coalfield, located about 40 kilometers east-northeast. The formations in the Danyang coalfield have a general strike N30°E, dipping steeply towards west. The coal-bearing strata are thrust by two thrust faults which were probably formed during the limestone plateau was being pushed towards east. The Pyeongan System in the coalfield is divided into three groups, namely, the Gomog, the Cheolam and the Hwangji, and they are subdivided into seven formations. Paleocurrent study of the formations shows that a general direction of the water flow in the coal basin was from east to west during deposition of the Pyeongan System. The upper-most part of the Sangdong Group or the so-called upper-most part of the Great Limestone Series yields Ordovician conodonts. The Manhang and Geumcheon Formations of the Gomog Group intercalate lenticular limestone beds with marine fossils along with Fusulinids. The foraminifers show the formations to belong to Moscovian in age, as is the case of the same formations in the Samcheog coalfield. Though the Cheolam Group intercalates several coal beds, fossil plants are rare. Most coal beds in the Danyang coalfield may be of allochthonous in origin. The Hwangji Group has shale beds containing fossil plants.
