    The Kyŏngsang Synthem²⁾ is a major unconformity-bounded unit consisting in Korea of nonmarine sedimentary and igneous rocks of about the whole span of the Cretaceous System. In southeastern Korea, there is a large separate mass of the Kyŏngsang Synthem accumulated in an apparently spatulate trough called the Kyŏngsang basin, which consists of three sedimentary basins: the Nakdong, the Sinla, and the Yŏngyang subbasins. Four developmental phases of the Kyŏngsang basin are: (1) pre-volcanic, (2) sparsely volcanic, (3) climactic volcanic, and (4) granite emplacement phases. Corresponding stratigraphic units are here called the Sindong Group, the Hayang Group, the Yuchŏn Group, and the Bulguksa intrusive group. The Sindong Group is a late orogenic molasse, the source area to the northwest being the Okchŏn orogen that was intermittently rising during the Sindong sedimentation. Its distribution is confined to the Nakdong subbasin, an elongated intermontane sedimentary trough in the western part of the Kyŏngsang basin. The Hayang Group is characterized by sparsely comprised volcanic and volcaniclastic layers. During the time of the Chilgok Formation the Kyŏngsang basin expanded giving rise to the Sinla and the Yŏngyang subbasins in which unstable sedimentations with shifting facies variations started to take place. In the Nakdong subbasin the Hayang Group gradually deposited on the Sindong Group. But, in the other parts of the Kyŏngsang basin, the basal part of the Hayang Group unconformably overlies mostly gneiss and granite. The division into the former Nakdong (Rakuto) and the Sinla (Shiragi) Groups is possible only over the limited area where the Sinla Conglomerate occurs, but the division into the Sindong and the Hayang Groups works throughout the whole Kyŏngsang basin. The Yuchŏn Group is composed dominantly of volcanic layers and subordinately of associated sedimentary rocks. The base of the Yuchŏn Group is unconformable and shows in some places an intertonguing relationship with the Hayang Group. The Bulguksa intrusive group is here regarded as a part of the Kyŏngsang Synthem because the major unconformity separating the Kyŏngsang Synthem from the overlying Tertiary deposits is above the Bulguksa intrusives. A high here called the “Chŏngsong ridge” existed between the Sinla and Yŏngyang subbasins. The recognition of the Kisadong Formation straddling over the Chŏngsong ridge was the key to work out the stratal correlation between these subbasins. Likewise, the recognition of the Kumidong Formation was the key to work out stratal correlation between the Nakdong and the Sinla subbasins. The Dopyŏng and the Milyang blocks of the Sinla subbasin subsided differently from each other during the sedimentation of the Hayang Group causing abrupt lateral lithologic changes across the Palgongsan granite outcrop area.
