Fragments of Neuropteris sp. have been discovered in the basal beds of the Gabsan Formation and it is suggested that the Gabsan Formation can be correlated with the Hongjeom Formation of Manhangian age. Some outcrops of the Sambangsan Formation of the Yeongweol area may also be Manhangian in age and it is suggested that the name ‘Sambangsan Formation’ may have been wrongly applied to these latter rocks as the Sambangsan Formation of the type area in the Machari coalfield contains a middle Cambrian fauna.
