The Gwangju Fault is located at 20 km west of the city of Gwangju and trends northeast/southwest with a probable continuity in excess of 40 km. It has three branches at upper half part and the middle one is most prominent in the southern part of the Ogcheon Basin. The geologic sequences in the area are Precambrian Sobaegsan Gneiss Complex, Jurassic Granite, Cretaceous sedimentary rocks and its syndepositional volcanic rocks, late Cretaceous Naejangsan volcanic rocks and alluvial deposits in ascending order. In order to date the age of the fault 4 volcanic rocks, 1 granite and 1 granitic gneiss were selected for radiometric dating. The Gwangju Fault is supposed to be closely related to Daebu orogenic movement and plutonism. Its action had begun probably at early Cretaceous and ended definitely before late Cretaceous marked by Naejangsan volcanic eruption.
