The surveyed area, Haenam Peninsular and its vicinity, consists mainly of tuffaceous rock and igneous rocks of Cretaceous. The tuffaceous rock overlies unconformably on an unknown-age silicic schist and porphyrite flow of earlier Cretaceous, and it strikes N 78° W in general. The igneous rocks which contain diorites, porphyries and granites intrude the sediment, and the granite of Sani Peninsular intrudes the anticlinal axis of the sediment. Lithologically the tuffaceous sediment is divided into two different beds, lower and upper. The lower bed is partly agglomeratic coarse grained tuffaceous rock and the upper bed is pinkish fine grained tuff. The lower bed is estimated about 440 meters in thickness and contains 20 interbedded black calcareous shales with several beds of limestone, chert and agglomerate. The vertical core drilling at a point near Ŭhangri beach was carried out down to 340 meter depth. The drilling revealed that the lower bed contains oily materials in twelve different horizons of black shale intercalated in it. Oily indications are (1) brownish grease-like material associated with euhedral crystals of α-quartz and calcite which filled cracks, produced vertically to bedding plane, of the shale, (2) oily odor from the black shale, and (3) microscopic fine spherical granular and reddish brown film-formed materials which may be kerogen in the shale. According to chemical analyses of samples from outcrops and boring cores, the part ranging from 45 to 110 meter depth of the column indicates relatively higher concentration in oily material and a sample from the part shows 1,352 calories per gram. The chemical analyses of two samples of outcrop made at laboratory of U.S. Bureau of Mines indicate that they are oil shales, containing oil 0.6 and 0.9 gallons per ton respectively. So far as the writer knows, the study of the oily material-containing formation is of value for academic research, but not for economic interest.
