Three sedimentational stages are recognized throughout the Gyeongsang Group sedimentation: The first is the stage of pre-volcanic sedimentation before deposition of the upper (or tuffaceous member) of the Chilgog(漆谷) Formation, when volcanism commenced in the Gyeongsang basin. The second is the stage of syn-volcanic sedimentation before formation of the Jusasan (朱砂山) volcanics; the sedimentation was generally concurrent with isolated and intermittent, relatively quiet lava-dominant eruptions, whose products are lenticular in outcropping surface, relatively basic in composition and subordinate in quantity to the dominating clastic sedimentary rocks. The third stage is the time of relatively violent and vigorous volcanisms represented by the Jusasan Formation, a complex of dominant pyroclastics, subordinate lavas, pyroclastic flows and ignimbrites of generally intermediate compositions; the inserted sedimentary rocks are negligible in quantity. The Jusasan eruptions were heralded by Chaeyagsan(採藥山) eruption; both formations are separated in the surface but most probably continuous in subsurface, as suggested by the continuous transition from the Jyeongbyeongsan(精兵山) Formation to the Palyongsan(八龍山)-Jusan (主山) complex in the Masan(馬山) area, the equivalent of the Jusasan Formation.Three areas of differential syn-tectonic sedimentation are recognized in the Gyeongsang basin, i.e., the Miryang(密陽), Euiseong(義城) and Yeongyang(英陽) areas, from the south to the north. The boundary between the first and the second areas is the Plagongsan(八公山) line running N 70°W along the long axis of the Palgongsan granite outcrop. The differential sedimentation is explicitly exemplified by the deposition of the Silra(新羅) Conglomerate Tongue, whose distribution is abruptly stopped, hiding its blunt northern end in the Palgongsan granite. The boundary between the second and the third areas is the Andong(安東) fault. The Naktong sedimentation is largely confined in the south of this line. The Ulyeonsan(尉蓮山), Donghwachi(東花峙) and Gasongdong(佳松洞) Formations, previously supposed to be the Naktong Subgroup, have been identified as the Silra Subgroup on the basis that they contain volcanic sharpstones, which were found by the author the most creditable criteria of the Silra Subgroup.
