Hwang, Ji-woo's early poems have been understood within the perspective of aesthetic experiment destroying the traditional grammar of poetry. However, his deconstructive poems take the characteristics of satire rather than just aesthetic experiment. Playful spirit, comedic attitude and criticism from close examination on contemporary reality were the driving forces of deconstructive technique. It is discovered in the manner of making a caricature of oppressive reality. Hwang writes poems of laughing at oppression and terror of reality through comedic tone and imaginary game to face with the reality of 1980s.
His poems of self-parody shows the aspect of criticizing negative reality and himself surrendering to it. As for poems of setting a dramatic speaker, various satiric tones such as irony and paradox are used with the mood of tragicomedy.
The property of satire in his aesthetic experiment is more clearly confirmed from the examination of montage and collage. His deconstructive poems extract and quote plenty of parts and fragments of reality and they sharply reveals the problems of contemporary reality. The technique of presenting them paratactically contains the intention of satirizing reality.
This kind of poems are very rare in the existing satirical poems. Hwang's poems reflects comedic attitude and shows very intellectual and objective writing method. In this respect, the satiric world in Hwang's early poetry can be assessed that it opens the new possibility of Korean satirical poetry.
