In the serial poems of Namhaengsicho written at the trip to Tongyung, Gosung, Samchunpo, and other places, Baek Suk's poetic attitude was to remind himself of the meaning of traditional cultural heritage in the lives of Chosun people, and also to find out the meaning. In the middle 1930s, the discourse of the intelligentsia aimed at rediscovery of things Chosun. The genuine qualities of traditional culture of our own which he tried to rediscover were an effective means of resistance to Japan's colonialist historiography. He tried to rediscover the substance of national cultural elements buried in the order of community lives in three ways.
Firstly, the view of the Cause and Effect is revealed, which means every former deeds have the results as much. By way of ‘Pumba taryeong of leper’ in Tongyung, he awoke himself to the importance of karma and tried to make good ties and associations with the people around.
Secondly, the spirit of ‘preservation of cultural heritage’, that is, ‘marriage feast food (which a bride's family sends to the bridegroom's family)’ which might be perished by Japan is inherent in the poems. He, by way of Gosung Highway, showed us rich food culture of our ancestor, and then accepted traditional feast food culture.
Thirdly, the preservation of our soil fertility against artificial fertilizer was shaped. Japanese militaristic system forced the use of artificial fertilizer in the name of farm promotion. However, he shaped the poor people, too poor to buy the artificial fertilizer, who had to make compost with human or animal wastes in Samchunpo.
In consequence, his poetic perspective is to remind of genuineness of Chosun culture which was forgotten or will be perished. It is possible to say that Baek Suk's poetic effort is a practice of literary planning to preserve our own spirit and cultural elements as in the Namhaengshicho poems, TongyungㆍGosung HighwayㆍSamchunpo.
