Lee Su-bok has been largely regarded as a traditional lyric poet because his works, including 'Bom-bee' (“spring rain”), contain the kinds of rhythm, delicate feelings, emotional sensitivity, and the Korean sentiments uniquely reflected in traditional Korean lyric poems. Lee's poetic imagination takes a contemplative view on nature, is, of course, nature-friendly, and arouses traditional feelings in his readers. In this sense, Lee's poems closely resemble those of other traditional poets such as Kim So-wol and Kim Yeong-rang.
However, Lee's works are distinct from those other traditional lyric poets. His poems are unique in that they demonstrate a creative combination of our traditional lyricism and Western modernism. This combination distinguishes Lee not only from other traditional lyric poets but also from contemporary modernist poets in Korea. Whereas the modernist Korean poets at the time such as Kim Sooyoung tended to solely pursue Western modernism while departing from the Korean traditional lyricism, images mirrored in Lee's poems are intended to express the 'traditional lyricism.'
Such traditional lyricism found in Lee's work is exemplified in the frequent use of plant names. He creates images of nature, especially those of plants, by using varied metaphors and symbols, which allow him to express sentiments at a surprising level of depth. In an ultimate sense, such images Lee creates correspond to the Korean sentiments that present aesthetics of sorrow by describing resentment and living in seclusion.
