The roof-end tiles (so-called Wadang) are auxiliary construction materials mounted on the eaves of the roof. They symbolized the authority and power of dominant class and reflected the ideology of the times. While conducting the research on the meaning and symbolism of Wadang, we found that there were considerable number of Wadangs of which edge part was broken. Such intentionally damaged roof-end tiles are called collectively “Heogi Wadang (damaged roofitles)” in Korean and the followings are summary of the analysis on the relation between the excavated Heogi Wadang and other relics that were found accompanied with them and the pattern of the burying method. Heogi Wadang were distributed centering on the capital cities in all of three kingdoms of Goguryo, Baikje and Shilla. In particular as for Shilla. they were mainy buried in transportation roads that were directed toward the basins of Han River. The relic places where the Heogi Wadang were found were tombs. fortresses. the sites of pond. temples. etc. The location of the relics wasclose to water such as river and brook and the relics excavated were all related to water in common such as pond. well. and collecting basin As for the burying pattern according to relics. the sites are classified into collecting basin, building site, filled -up ground. stone-accumulated tombs. and others. Collecting basin includes moat, pond, well, reservoir, drainage carnal. etc This indicates that Heogi Wadang were mainly buried in collecting basin and site of filled-up ground including building site. Classifying the characteristics of Heogi Wadang by Three Kingdoms. Heogi Wadang Were found in four kinds of roof-end tiles in Goguryo Kingdom. They were the roof-end tiles having double-line lotus pattern, single-petal lotus pattern. combined lotus pattern, and mixed lotus pattern. All of the roof-end tiles of Baikje Kingdom had single-petal lotus pattern. In the pattern, there were another petal patterns on the single pattern and they consisted of 6-petal or 8-petal decoration. Only the relics found in the Mireuk Temple had 6-petal decoration and most of others bad 8 petal decoration on the pattern. Like Baikje, Heogi Wadang were found only in the roof tiles having single-petal lotus pattern in Shilla Kingdom. But the decorations on the single-petal lotus pattern were diverse in decoration ranging from 6 petals to 12 petals. Heogi Wadang first found in the stone-accumulated tombs and they were found in other places such as fortresses and temples, which showed their expansion. Due to the prejudice in academic circles that Wadang is just a construction material, there wereinsufficient efforts to find the symbolic meaning.
