Artifact materials refer to real materials with historical value and materials that have been sufficiently restored so as to be fit for teaching with. The value of an artifact in the classroom is that it allows students to speculate and attempt to understand the thought process of a historian.
A teacher should be able to emphasize to students the significance that every day objects will have in the future as historical artifacts in their own right. Furthermore, artifacts can be important in other subjects which are related to history, such as politics and economics. In addition, artifacts can be used at every level of education, from elementary school to university education. They can be of equal value in any part of a lesson or lecture, from an introduction to a conclusion.
Classroom lessons which use artifact materials allow teachers to contextually convey the situation and time in which they were used and to back up the historical facts. Through research and observation, students experience the exploration process of a history researcher by asking specific questions on artifact materials and finding historical meaning.
In order for artifacts to be used effectively and in a widespread manner, a network must be built up within the educational and historical communities. In addition, Korean history lessons which use artifact materials can effectively occur if a history lesson is created with the artifacts on display.
