This study examines the effects of compact urban development on carbon emissions taking account of buildinq and transport energy consumptions as well as carbon absorption by greenfield simultaneously. Based upon a simple geometric urban form, it develops the theoretical mathematical model that interrelates vertical distance of elevator movement, horizontal distance of automobile journey, and size of open space(greenfield). Numerical simulation confirms a non-linear relationship between the level of compactness and carbon emission; As the urban form becomes more compact, a decrease in carbon emission in transport and greenfield sectors outweighs an increase in building sector to some extent, but the opposite becomes true beyond a certain level of compactness. This relationship is ultimately specified by identifying the optimal level of compactness which reduces carbon emission at the maximum and the threshold level from which carbon emission rather starts to increase, both in terms of building height.
