Yoo Jin-oh, one of the writers of Dogangpa during the Korean War, chose to emphasize the legitimacy of taking refuge as a subject matter. In contrast to a fellow writer Mo Yoon-sook who described heroic characters regarding refuge, Yoo Jin-oh described weak intellectuals and reinforced the justification of taking refuge. Instead of an internal factor, he looked for an external factor of choosing refuge. He defined refuge not as an escape but as a shelter for a better future. Here lies the most significant meaning of his works, that is, to discover a way to achieve both life and morality. One of the important events that took place at the outbreak of Korean War was evacuation, which was not an act for survival; it was an event that changed the topographical map of Korean society’s ideologies. While those literary figures who failed to evacuate(the remaining party) did writing as a means of relieving their guilty conscience and justification for treachery, those who succeeded in evacuation(Dogangpa) used their writing to show they were thoroughly anti-communist.
