This paper investigates the life and studies of Hong Ki-Moon, during the late Japanese Occupation. Hong Ki-Moon, employed at the Chosun Ilbo newspaper, ceased all social activities after the newspaper discontinued publication and led a life of seclusion in Chang-dong. Artist Kim Yong-Jun’s writings reveal the inner life of Hong Ki-Moon. During this period, Hong Ki-Moon wrote Jeongeumbaldalsa (History of the Korean Script), an outstanding research on Hunminjeongeum. There is a rumor that Jeongeumbaldalsa was the result of joint research with Bang Jong-Hyun, and Hong Ki-Moon received recognition for the achievements alone. However, close inspection of the writing process clearly indicates that the book is solely the work of Hong Ki-Moon. Later, Hong Ki-Moon focused on research of historical records. He perused History of the Koryo Dynasty and Annals of the Chos?n Dynasty for years until the Japanese Occupation ended in August 1945. Such commitment to studies during dismal times in preparation for the future became the decisive factor in Hong Ki-Moon’s decision to lead the life of a scholar rather than a journalist or politician after the Japanese Occupation ended.
