This article examined the process of translating ‘sovereignty’ into Japanese. The term ‘sovereignty’ was translated as ‘主權’ in late 19c when european international political order had invaded traditional political order and concept of east Asian countries. This process should be interpreted not as simple word-to-word translation but as complex and paradoxical juncture in which european modern political order and institution has been implanted into non-european country. Some debates about political and legal legitimacy of Japanese empire have showed how translation of sovereignty has influenced to political imagination of modern Japan and Maruyama Masao’s thought can be regarded as a panorama showing what was the problem of this process. This article tried to make some considerations about his legacy which still would have a critical meaning to contemporary political condition of east Asian world.
