Park, Young-Ye. An Analysis of Early English Literacy of Elementary School Students. The New Studies of English Language & Literature 49 (2011): 201-225. The present study analyzed early literacy of elementary students in the 6th grade. The students’ early English literacy was measured by assessing their knowledge of the alphabet letter names, phonological awareness, word identification, and oral reading fluency. The results showed that female students scored higher on oral reading fluency and read sight words faster than male students. Students in urban areas were observed to possess higher English literacy skills in phonological awareness and word identification than those in rural areas. A significant difference was found in early literacy between the students with higher reading skills in word identification and those with lower skills. The findings revealed a significant gap between the lower-level readers and fluent readers, especially in oral reading fluency, in that lower-level readers showed a relatively slower reading speed of 29 words per minute, compared to 65 words per minute by fluent readers. Some implications and suggestions for further study are included. (Daegu National University of Education)
