This paper is about how the city wall was built and how the city fortification works. The construction of the city walls was very expensive. Therefore, it is impossible to believe that a prince would undertake this costly construction. The construction of the walls thus resulted from the dynamics of a power struggle between the princes and the citizens. Without the development of urban economy, it was impossible to build the city wall, and without building the city wall, the autonomy of the city can not be realized. The process of the change of the right of building the city wall can be examined.
To understand the function of the city wall, we focus on the duty of the city defense and the participation in the feud. Residents who live in the city were not only those who live under the city law, but also nobility, clergy and Jews who do not live under the city law. We consider the obligation of the city residents in aspect of some medieval cities of North-East Germany. It is analyzed how altered the city’s defense system, as the guild in the 14th Century economically developed and participated in the urban policy.
And we are dealing with the fighting troops, especially from the guilds, mercenaries and knights of the various urban examples. The development of powder weapons changes the city’s defense system. The troops of the guilds and the municipal Knights play no major role in the fight as they used to. The last force that was responsible for the city’s defense was in the 16th Century mercenaries.
