For the blind, some engineering systems such as guide robot and ETA (Electronic Travel Aid) have been developed[2,3], but in the sense of practical use, those research and development are not fully satisfied. In the case of ETAs such as the Mowat sensor, KASPA, SonicVisioN and NavBelt etc., a fundamental shortcoming with all ETAs based on acoustic feedback is their interference (called "masking") with sound cues from the environment, reducing the blind person's ability to hear these essential cues[2]. So, this research focuses on the tactile feedback for the transfer of obstacle information in walking guide robot[4].
The existent tactile stimulators are divided by pneumatic[5,6], vibrotactile[7-10], electrotactile[11], etc[12,13]. The touch senses of the human are poor at determining absolute quantities but very sensitive to changes[14]. So. We are interested in the vibrotactile stimulation. This kind of device is compact and light, and this feature would be helpful for the portability needed in the walking guide robot for the blind.
The purpose of this research is the development of a walking guide robot for the blind to walk safely. Fig. 1 shows the schematic diagram of walking guide robot for the blind. A walking guide robot consists of a guide vehicle and a tactile display device. A guide vehicle, located in the front of the walking blind, detects the obstacle using ultrasonic and infrared ray sensors, and offers the information of position and walking direction acquired from GPS module to the walking blind by voice. The tactile display device, located in the handle which is connected with the guide vehicle by cane, offers the processed obstacle information such as position, size, moving, shape of obstacle and safe path, etc.
