This paper discusses the cultural expressions of the 1920’s with relation to the concept of the “New Negro”. I will begin with a overview of the history of African-Americans in the 1920s, before moving to an examination of Negro culture-specifically, on black music and the exploitation of black artists. This paper will then analyze the conflict between the proponents of the old and new forms of black music (ie. between the Blues-as personified by the character of Ma Rainey -and Swing-as personified by Levee). Afterward, the role of the Blues as a significant source of cohesion among the black masses will be discussed.
