Drainage layers in old tunnels are often clogged as time has passed after construction. The causes of the clogging are known as the groundwater flow around the tunnels with lime or clay substances, which makes the geotextiles deteriorated used in the drainage layers around the tunnels. Currently, for geosynthetic materials used in the drainage layers of domestic tunnels are mainly non-woven fabrics and the standards of the drainage geotextiles are designated by the thickness and weight. It is necessary to include the clogging term in the standards of geosynthetic drainage materials of tunnels. In this study, the influence of the calcium carbonate (CaCO₃) substances on the hydraulic characteristics of geosynthetic materials in tunnels is evaluated by performing the permeability tests.
Two geosynthetic materials, i.e. needle punched geotextiles currently being used in the drainage layers of domestic tunnels and thermal heat bonded geotextiles are the concern. The results of the tests showed that the permeability reduction varied significantly depending on the presence of the lime substance and that the degree of reduction in permeability was greater in the needle punched geotextiles than in the thermal heat bonded geotextiles.
