Recently, the speed of ground vehicles has been increased rapidly. Therefore, influence of aerodynamic phenomena such as aerodynamic drag, noise, influence of cross-wind and passing-by became important to the vehicle performance and people started to concentrate on the aerodynamic characteristics of the ground vehicles. But contrastively, the aerodynamic phenomena did not considered as a priority in the initial design process.
The main topic of this paper is to make it clear that why the aerodynamic phenomena should be more considered and suggest a new design progress which satisfies both aerodynamic performance and aesthetic execution. So far, aerodynamic vehicle engineer’s participation in design process has been very limited even though ‘Design’ is the key point of modern manufacture industry. Especially when designing ground vehicles such as cars or trains, the roles of the engineers are limited to the structure analysis or aerodynamic analysis. It pushed engineers out of the core design process of the manufacturing system. This trend comes from different standpoint between designers and engineers. Engineer’s main purpose is to achieve high efficiency only which means vehicle with the highest efficiency is the final goal to them. On the other hand, vehicle is an art work for designers. Similar to other artistic works, vehicle design contains philosophy itself and the aspect of commercial business. Therefore, changing the design of the vehicle only for performance improvement without designer’s agreement is not acceptable.
To break the old custom, a new design process is suggested in this study which considers the aerodynamic performance of the vehicle and aesthetic designing simultaneously. The design process consists of the collaboration between aerodynamic engineer and aesthetic designer. The process is applied to the main body of a ground vehicle first then to the accessory parts such as spoiler or airdam. Finally, by performing CFD aerodynamic analysis and optimization process, it is shown that how the aerodynamic performance affects the aesthetic design and vice versa. As a result, the purpose of this study is suggestion of a design process which considering both engineer’s and designer’s goals on the conceptual design stage for ground vehicle development which deserves significant consideration in the commercial automobile industry.
