This paper examined how the Western visitors saw the body of the Korean, focused on Corea or Cho-sen: The Land of the Morning Calm written by Arnold H. Savage Landor. He was a British painter and traveler. He visited Korea in 1890. His visiting did not have any other intention than travel and paint. That is, he had no specific reason for his trip such as a mission work or an economic invasion. Therefore his description of Korean was distinctive from other Western visitors to Korea.
Arnold H. Savage Landor was called “disguised Corean” for he was always mistaken for one, notwithstanding that he dressed in European clothes. He said, “As for several months I was seen day after day sketching in the streets, the people got to know me well, and since the Coreans themselves are very fond of art, (...) I made numerous friends among them, and even, I might say, become popular.” So, he had a sense of closeness, and he seemed to like Korean.
It is more interesting that he said that some Korean people resembled white people. But he said that the coolie classes looked like Africans, while the feature of higher classes people closely approached Aryan. This thought is interesting in terms of two points. The One is the racial feature of Korean was different from other Asian such as Chinese or Japanese and close to European people. This note is found in many other Western visitors at that time. The other is, however, Landor’s viewpoint was based on classism. He jumped to a conclusion that the body of higher classes was superior to that of the lower classes and he assumed that the European(white) body was superior to Asian(yellow) or African(black) body.
