This research is to analyze the urban structural relationship between daily work trip and weekend leisure trip in the Seoul Metropolitan Area (SMA) in order to reduce total distance of work and leisure travel. In this paper, first, theoretical base and earlier studies were reviewed in terms of urban structure and compensatory mechanism. Second, the travel pattern between work and weekend leisure was analyzed using the weekend travel survey data of the SMA of 2006. Finally, the behavior of work and leisure travel was investigated according to the travelers’ socio-demographic characteristics. The analysis resulted in that the travels represent a certain compensatory mechanism, and that they vary depending on their urban structural and social demographic conditions, however, without losing the mechanism. This paper closed with the conclusion that not only the urban structural aspect but also the travelers’ behavior of the compensatory mechanism under their socio-demographic conditions should be considered on the basis of understanding their interrelationship in order to establish an effective policy for the SMA to reduce transportation energy consumption.
