The purpose of this study was to examine the effect of different types of shoes on lower limb musculoskeletal system. Ten male and ten female subjects performed running tests at 3.5m/s with three different types of shoes (sport shoes, hiking boots, and military boots). Ground reaction force (GRF) and acceleration were recorded during test using force plates and accelerometer. To examine the absorbtion rate and magnitude of force from impact, transmission ratio (TR), median frequency (MDF), and peak GRF were analyzed. Male subjects demonstrated a higher peak vertical ground reaction force with military boots. Military boots did not exert better shock-absorbing effect, since it generated greater MDF. Military boots had the lowest load factor, thereby allowing ineffective forward propulsion movement. Different results from female subjects are presumably caused by the fact that females subjects were not able to perform the running test with military boots in proper way. In this study, it was observed that military boots prevented wobbling motion in relation to the other conditions, but increased loading on distal segment, which could be a potential risk of knee and hip joints injuries.
