Christian education in Korea is currently facing various kinds of challenges such as the rapid emergence of globalization, the serious crisis of public education, the privatization of ecclesial practices, and the fragmentation of fields of Christian education. These challenges require an alternative model of Christian education, one that could respond to their concerns in an appropriate manner. In this context, Christian global education in Christian schools can be an effective educational model. For several decades, global education in Korea has been usually taught within the context of public education. Christian education lacked an interest in global education, for it focused mainly on the ecclesial congregations. To address these problematic challenges mentioned above, this paper aims to pose a model of Christian global education in Christian schools in terms of the concept of “public paideia.” The model of public paideia is presented as an alternative approach in that it seeks creative integration between opposite dimensions of Christian global education: individual-communal, discipleship-citizenship, personal-public, and regional-global dimensions.
This paper consists of four main sections. The first section explores a brief history and the meaning of global education, including a brief history of global education in Korea. The following section examines the relationship between global education and Christian schools under the following three subcategories: (1) the school, especially Christian school, as an essential field of Christian education, (2) global education in the public and Christian schools, and (3) global education as an essential task of Christian schools. Section three defines and reconceptualizes public paideia as a basis of Christian global education. The final section poses a model of Christian global education rooted in the concept of public paideia, focusing on its goals, contents, and curriculum.
