Repentance is “A change of mind leading to a change of a action. It involves a sincere turning away from sin to serve God. It also includes the sorrow for, and the confession of sin where possible restitution can be expected.”
The Pyeongyang Great Awakening Movement in the year of 1907 brought a monumental result to the modern history of Korea. This movement in the way of modernization became a momentum to make the Korean Christians and the Korean people live moral lives of a higher dimension.
It was through this movement that Korean people became to recognize Christianity as a religion of a higher ethical values, and of an ability to point out sin more radically from the biblical viewpoint. Accordingly thereafter, the Koreans have come to revere Christians for their upright life.
The fact that is essential to acknowledge here is that a myriad of people confessed their various sins due to the shock of holy experience, such sins ranging from the immense guilt felt out of facing the holy words before God, to sins which incur punishment after the violation of the practical criminal law.
It is amazing to recognize the fact that they wholeheartedly confessed their sins before the congregation, which had been of an extraneous nature to these individuals until that moment. It was a significantly uplifting event to a higher level of ethics. In that respect it can be said that the 1907 Revival Movement had a great impact on the formation of the ethical consciousness of the Korean people, such as honesty, conscience, responsibility, guilt; serving as a positive and effective influence on the uplifting of the ethical and moral dimension of the education for the greater meaning of Korean education.
Another important point in this study is that repentance shown in this unique awakening movement proceeds on to the teaching of the Bible, as I have examined in the previous chapter. This fact guarantees the authority and integrity of this movement. Because of this feature, many elements of this movement remain as a unique tradition of the Korean Church to this very day.
This movement effortlessly gave way to the already on-going social reformation of the Korean society, and as a result, it served as a influential participant in the abolition of the class distinction. Also at the same time, it strengthened the aspiration for the independence from Japan.
In that respect it can be said that the 1907 Pyengyang Great Awakening Movement’s influence on the civil education was monumental.
