Paintings of “Silla King Stupa”, “Silla Transport Mission”, “Goguryeo Envoys” and “Bodhi Temple” depicted in the “Map of Mount Wutai” on the west wall of Cave No. 61 are very important materials preserved in Dunhuang Mogao Grottoes to study the ancient Korean Peninsula cultures. The Silla King Stupa was constructed between 638 A.D. and 643 A.D. by Ci Zang, the eminent monk from the Unified Silla Dynasty. Various figures depicted in the paintings of Silla Transport Mission and Goguryeo Envoys show the hats and costumes then worn by the Unified Silla and Goguryeo people at the end of the Late Tang dynasty. The Bodhi Temple is the place where the Silla eminent monk Hui Chao became a monk, meditated and translated the sutras. The draft that the Map of Mount Wutai of Cave 61 was painted based on was completed probably before Late Tang dynasty. The aforementioned materials, as the proof of the cultural exchanges between ancient China and ancient Korean Peninsula, are worthy of further discussion.
